Paint the Sky with Stars, an assortment of Enya's best work. The most melodic and atmospheric examples of Enya's lovely Celtic-flavored songwriting shine on this disc. Overall, an outstanding collection from an artist who gives New Age a good name. |

This twentysomething, Mozambique-born beauty of Portuguese, Spanish, German, African, and Indian descent rapidly rose from the Mouraria district of Lisbon to become fado's newest and brightest star. The 12 selections on this recording are arranged in chamber-style ensembles consisting of bass, piano, classical guitar, and its 12-stringed, Portuguese cousin, the Portuguese viola.

Sevara Nazarkhan
Album Review
Yol Bolsin
Label: Real World
Genre: Contemporary Folk
Origin: Uzbekistan
Format: Music CD
Wiki article
|
Yol Bolsin is an intriguing new export traveling west on Asia's Silk Road. The debut of 25-year-old Uzbeki singer and doutar player Sevara Nazarkhan, the album combines the rich musical tradition of her Central Asian country and fuses it with the modern sounds of noted French-Algerian producer Hector Zazou. Like much of the best stuff to come out on Real World, the combination here is timely and timeless, with Zazou's modern sounds simply providing a tasteful backing to the plucked, lutelike lines of Nazarkhan and fellow doutar player Toir Kuziyev. A pop star in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan, Nazarkhan has a soaring, conservatory-trained voice that conveys myriad emotions with range and an intonation enriched with deft shading. |
