Love, Shelby

|
Another smooth release from this Grammy-totin' diva. Beauty, music, and a healthy side of sass.
When former country starlet Shelby Lynne reinvented her musical persona on 2000's flawed but affecting I Am Shelby Lynne, critics salivated and even the Grammys responded with a belated Best New Artist trophy. The album's sound, somewhere between classic Memphis grooves, gothic swamp music, and post-Brill Building AM pop, was special enough that word of Lynne's studio collaboration with hyper-commercial producer-songwriter Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthews Band) set some minds to worrying that her edge would be lost. They can stop fretting. Love, Shelby is actually superior in some ways to its predecessor.

The hooky, upbeat "Walk This World" sounds like a major hit, but it's merely the most accessible side of a feverish, poetic artist who'll be compared more to Sarah McLachlan and Sinead O'Connor than to Sheryl Crowe. Lush melodies abound, but some tracks ("Island," "Sugar") have an intensity worthy of Patti Smith, and there's emotional blood on tracks like "Blue Black." Other highlights on this edgy, affecting debut are "Maybe an Angel" and "Throwing Fire at the Sun." |

Not a single dud on this intriguing amalgam of jazz vocal style, rap, hip-hop, and truly soulful melodic and percussive combos. Rap and hip-hop for non-fans of that musical style. I have rarely heard such a creative foray into multiple musical styles pulled off with such seamless craftiness. How long will this CD go before it gets a giant contract from a major rec company? On the other hand, leave them alone so I can keep catching them cheap in Atlanta. Get it and listen to it now! I have gone over it ten times without any lapse in interest. Great stuff. Jewel
Title
Pieces of You
Label: Atlantic / Wea
Genre: Rock

|
Jewel's debut album, Pieces of You, reveals a special voice--strong and focused on both the whispery verses and the hooky choruses. The recording also exposes an unfortunate tendency to present trite, hackneyed sentiments as if they were oracular visions from a young prophet to a jaded world. For the most part, Jewel sings to her own acoustic guitar accompaniment, but she has a lot more in common with, say, the Indigo Girls or Lisa Loeb than with Judy Collins or Nanci Griffith. Despite her soft soprano and pretty melodies, her songs have an iconoclastic edge which make her more of an unplugged alternative rocker than a folkie. Her songs too often betray their origins as written verse in their hard-to-sing meters, unmusical phrasing, and diary-like pronouncements. Nonetheless, a few numbers, such as "Morning Song" and "You Were Meant for Me," show a spark of humor about romance, and hint that Jewel may yet write songs worthy of her remarkable voice |
